The Railway Children – 10 useful examples for Themes, Characters, Moral Values.

Some books write complicated details and use difficult words. Many students cannot understand well. With slightly simpler language, we have helped you to list down 10 most useful examples that can be used in Question 7 in PT3.

All you need to do now is to remember them and use  them during exams.

1. The Children’s father is taken away. Their mother takes care of the children.

 

Roberta, Peter and Phyllis once live in a big house in London. Their father is taken away from them after being accused as a spy. After that, they become poor so they have to move to a small house in the countryside. Their house is near to a railway line.

 

Without their father, their mother writes stories to earn money. She teaches them at home even though she cannot afford to send them to school. She even plans a small party for Roberta’s birthday.

2. Peter steals the coal from the station. Peter steals some coal from the train station for fire to heat up their house. He thinks no body will mind about it, as he does not take much. He does it because his mother says they are too poor to buy coal. When the Station Master finds out, he tells him it is wrong to do that but he forgives Peter and let him go.

3. Bobbie looks after her mother. After they move to the countryside, the children make life easier for their mother by being good. They wake up early the first morning and prepare breakfast for their mother.

 

When her mother is ill, Bobbie takes care of her. She cooks for her and takes care of Peter and Phyllis. When she receives a list of things to buy to help her mother get better, she comes up with a plan to get help from the old gentleman who takes the 9.15am train.

4. The old gentleman helps Bobbie buy things for her ill mother. When the children’s mother is ill, the doctor gives them a list of things to buy for their mother. They do not have the money. So, they come up with a plan.

 

The children wave to the old gentleman on the train to get his attention. When they meet him, Bobbie gives him a letter that has all the things they need to cure their mother. The old gentleman buys everything they ask for. He even gives them some extra things like juice, chickens and flowers.

5. Bobbie fixes Peter’s engine.

Bobbie wants to help Peter fix his engine. She risks her life to go to the railway where the engines stopped. She even falls on to the heap of coal before she can ask the men to help her fix Peter’s engine. Fortunately, the men kindly fix the toy engine for her.

6. The children stop a train from a landslide

The children see a landslide on the railway tracks and they decide they have to do something or the train will crash. They wave their red flags (petticoats) to signal the train. Bobbie even runs on to the line and waves her flags to stop the train. In the end, they manage to stop the train but the train stops only twenty meters from her.

We must be brave

Bravery

 

 

7. The children celebrate Perks’ birthday.

Bobbie and her siblings want to make Perks happy on his birthday. Since they do not have money, they ask everyone in the neighbourhood to gather their presents and blessings for his birthday. Bobbie tells Perks about what people say about him. Perks is happy in the end.

8. The children save the boy in the red shirt.

A boy has gone into the train tunnel and has not come out during a paper-chase. The children (Bobbie, Peter, and Phyllis) quickly run into the tunnel to search for him. They even brave an oncoming train passing through the tunnel.

Later on, they finally find the boy. He is hurt and unconscious. Bobbie stays with the boy and let her siblings to go look for help. She then carefully puts her petticoat under his injured leg. They decided to bring him home to let their mother nurse the boy (Jim).

9. The old gentleman hires a maid and a cook.

When Jim is rescued by the siblings and is nursed by their mother. The old gentleman visits as he is Jim’s grandfather. He is very thankful to them and he hires a maid and a cook to take care of their meals until Jim is well.

10. The old gentleman helps rescue her father.

Bobbie is worried about her father. She asks for help from the old gentleman to find her father. He tells Bobbie he will help her because he has high hopes and he believes in their father’s innocence. In the end, the children’s father is released from prison.
