How I Met Myself- 9 Useful Examples for Characters, Moral Values, and Themes

If you are teaching learners with lower level, you will find this VERY handy.

Teaching the weaker group an entire novel in a short time can be very challenging. Here are some useful examples that you can use with your learners. They might not be all that’s happening in the novel but they are some of the most important scenes that learners should know. While writing this, I tried to make the language as simple as I can to make things easier for our learners.

How I Met Myself by David A. Hill. 

1. John meets his double. John is a smart man. He works in Hungary as a computer programmer. One day, he is walking home when someone runs into him. He falls into the snow and finds out that the man looks exactly like him. John wants to follow him but he has disappeared. John also realizes that the man does not leave any footprints in the snow.  
2. John is determined to find out about the stranger he meets. After he met his doppelgänger, John always has nightmares. He cannot sleep at night and cannot focus on his work. He questions the residents and does research in the library. He wants to find out what his doppelgänger is trying to tell him. Characteristic:

Determined

 

Moral Value:

We should be determined

 

Theme:

Determination

3. John and Andrea get ready for their baby girl. Before Kati is born, John and Andrea spend their summer holiday painting a small room in their flat for their baby. The couple never complains about how hard their life is. They love the baby and each other. They are also willing to make sacrifices. Characteristics:

Loving/caring

 

Moral Value:

We should be loving/caring

 

Theme:

Love

4. John decides to spend Christmas in England with his family. Andrea does not like that John is too obsessed toward his doppelgänger. Their relationship becomes worse. So John decides to spend their holiday (Christmas) in England. John and Andrea have a great time there as they spend time shopping together. After that, they fly back to Hungary to spend New Year with Andrea’s family. Their marriage life becomes better after that. Characteristics:

Loving/caring

 

Moral Values:

We should be loving/caring

 

Theme:

Love

5. John continues looking for the truth even though Andrea is upset.

Andrea thinks he is too obsessed in finding out more about his doppelganger that he starts to neglect his family. She cries when John he hangs out in the bar everyday after work without explaining to her.

        ………..

After the new year celebration in Hungary, John starts to think about his doppelgänger again and Andrea gets angry as he is distracted and does not care much about his family.

       ……….

Andrea does not want to listen about Janos’s story and she is not convinced.

       ………..

Although Andrea does not understand and she is not happy about John, he is determined to find out about his doppelgänger.

6. As a loving and caring wife, Andrea accompanies John to find out about his doppelganger.

Even though Andrea is angry, the next day she still goes to number 7 Felka utca with John. They question two housekeepers about the man. But the housekeepers say that they have never seen such a person.

       ……….

On 18 January, John and Andrea stand opposite number 7 Felka utca, He asks Andrea to watch as his doppelganger runs into him. John could not stop the man when he runs after the man. However, Andrea says she does not see anyone or hear anything.

Characteristic:

Determined/loving/ caring

 

Moral Value:

We should be determined/ loving/ caring

 

Theme:

Determination/ love

7. John finds out the history and the truth.

John goes to the Budapest City Library to look for more information. He comes across a newspaper article in Hungarian. A young mother and a child are killed in a cellar after a bombing happens in Gergely utca.   The victims are Mrs. Szabo and her daughter. They are killed on 18 January 1945.

When John visits, Mrs Fischer tells him about Janos Szabo. Janos is devastated when his wife and daughter are killed. His wife and daughter are also called Andrea and Kati.

 

Characteristic:

Determined

 

Moral Value:

We should be determined

 

Theme:

Determination

8. John loses hope as Andrea and Kati are trapped in an explosion at the bar. Andrea has to replace Zsolt to work at the bar. She takes Kati with her to work. John panics and runs to the bar to find them. As he is near to number 7 Felka utca, he hears a loud explosion in Gergely utca. He knows that Andrea and Kati are trapped in the bar. John tries to rush to save them. However, he realizes that no one could have survived the explosion and he blames himself for not telling Andrea about what he has found out. He was devastated and he thinks that he has destroyed his family. Characteristics:

Loving/caring

 

Moral Value:

We should be loving/caring

 

Theme:

Love

9. The doppelganger helps to save Andrea and Kati. Andrea believes John. When John sees his doppelgänger again, the man points to a woman and a child at the end of the street. Andrea and Kati are safe. Andrea tells John that the man blocks her way into bar and she realized it is not John but his doppelganger who is trying to save them. Characteristics:

Loving/caring

 

Moral Value:

We should be loving/caring

 

Theme:

Love
