5 Simple Steps to Write a Report – A trip to Sabah

Don’t be fooled by the word ‘report’ and certainly don’t be afraid of writing one.

Report

  • has a format
  • talks about something that has already happened
  • uses past tense

Sample QUESTION:

You went for a school trip with other members of the Cultural Society from your school. As the secretary of the society, write a report about the trip.

STEP 1: Write a TITLE

You need to give your report a title that starts with “Report on…”

STEP 2: Describe your trip in general

This is important when you write a report. You need to tell your reader these first:

  1. Who was the organiser?
  2. What was the activity?
  3. Where was the destination?
  4. How long was the event?
  5. What was the aim/objective of the event?

STEP 3: Write your story. macam biasa

Basically,

  • What happened on the first day ?
  • What happened on the second day?
  • What happened on the third day?

If it happened within a day,

  • What happened in the morning ?
  • What happened in the afternoon?
  • What happened in the evening?

Note: For a report you do not need to put in too much drama. Be more formal, and talk about the things that have happened.

STEP 4: when you finish your story, give your report a CONCLUSION

Before you end,  say thank you to the people who have supported you and helped you or sometimes you can write about the things that you have learned from what happened.

STEP 5: Mic drop!

Sign off with your name and your role.

As usual, here I have prepared 2 versions for you:

  1. Hi Grace,
I noticed that the number of paragraphs is inconsistent. I have been telling my kids to do 5 paragraphs, which I thought is the norm, and they’re used to this format already. Will they be penalised for writing beyond that?

    1. Hi Kevin,
I wouldn’t see that as a major issue in essay writing (though many might not agree)
I think students are free to write with the style that they feel most comfortable with.
And I’m sure you’re doing a great job with your kids now.

      1. Hi Grace,
It’s comforting to have that assurance. My kids tend to “overwrite”, which poses a headache when I mark. 🙂
        Thanks for the reply.
