8 Tips For PT3 English Speaking – how to speak (or act) like a pro – ALL LEVELS

Good day!

In the month of April you will be having your Ujian Lisan Bertutur bagi Bahasa Inggeris.

Many of you might feel nervous or worried that you would have nothing to say as your mind might go blank in the ‘assessment room’ .

Though it might be a little too late now for you to start from scratch, there are still some tips you can learn to ‘cheat’ through the test and be able to pass with pretty impressive score.

So, here we go.

TIP 1: Walk in confidently, smile, and look your teachers in the eyes when you say Hi to them.

Tip 1: Masuk bilik dengan yakin, senyum, dan pandang mata cikgu2 masa greetings.

First impression matters. Don’t show that you are scared or too shy to talk. Even if you are really really nervous, don’t panic. Stay calm. Smiling will help you, but remember you still need to talk. =)

Here are some sentences you can say to impress your teachers when you walk in:

  1. Good morning teachers.
  2. Hello teachers. How are you?
  3. Hi teachers, how’s it going?
  4. Hi teachers, how you doing today?

“Good morning teachers” is a little too common, you can try the other sentences and see how your teachers respond. If they ask you back ‘how are you?’

Don’t just say “I’m fine”. Go with these cooler sentences:

  1. I’m all right. Thanks. (and smile)
  2. Erm, not too bad. Thanks for asking. (and smile)
  3. I’m feeling great today, very excited to talk to you.
  4. Had a bad start today, didn’t have my breakfast. But it will be all right. (or other stories that you feel like sharing)

It’s okay to chat random things with your teachers. The fact that you can communicate in English will impress them. Just, be natural.

TIP 2: Read clearly. Do NOT MUMBLE!

TIP 2: Baca dengan jelas. Jangan menggumam.

Many students worry that they pronounce words incorrectly so they read in very low volume and tend to mumble. Don’t do that. If your teachers cannot hear you , they cannot give you marks!

Again, you need to show that you are confident. Don’t rush through the text. Take your time. Read slowly. and Read with intonation.  Maintain the same loudness.

Don’t worry if you don’t understand some words. No questions asked in part A.

TIP 3: It’s Okay to ask your teachers questions. That is what we call ‘communication’.

TIP 3: Jangan takut menanya. ‘komunikasi’ memerlukan respon dari dua hala.

Many students panic when they don’t understand what certain words mean. And then that’s it. They just cannot continue the whole speaking test.

You don’t have to panic if there’s a word or two that you are not sure of the meanings. You can actually ask questions.

These will help you to be more fluent, and encourage more exchanges between you and your teachers, it can also buy you some time to help you think for your ideas:

e.g. Teacher A: can you tell us the value of having good family getaway?

(say you are not sure of its meaning) (kalau anda kurang memahami solan)

Use these:

  1. Sorry Mdm/miss/sir, can you repeat the question?
  2. Sorry Mdm/miss/sir, can you repeat the question? I didn’t quite get it.
  3. Do you mean you want me to talk about the benefits of a family trip?
  4. Do you mean you want me to talk about the benefits of a family trip?  or just the examples?

If you’re weaker, when you completely don’t understand your teachers’ questions, you may ask them:

(untuk pelajar lemah yang tidak faham soalan)

  1. Sorry Mdm/miss/sir, I don’t really understand what you mean. Can you try another question?
  2. What is the meaning of ______ ?

This may/may not cost you some marks. But hey, it’s better than you sitting there and not saying anything right?

Personally, I think it shows genuine two-way communication and your teachers will appreciate that.

TIP 4: Remember some useful sentences for general questions.

TIP 4: Ingat beberapa jawapan yang sesuai untuk soalan umum.

There are some sentences you can use and they are very handy!

Question: Why do you like ______? / Why is _____ good? /What are the benefits of ___?

Possible answers:

  1. It’s good for our health/body/mind/eyes/ etc.
  2. It can help us to relax ourselves.
  3. It can build better relationship with our family and friends.
  4. We can have fun with our family and friends
  5. We can become a happier person.
  6. It can help make the world a better place.
  7. We can have a better future , to be someone successful.
Questions: Why is ____ not good? What are the disadvantages of ____ ?

Possible answers:

  1. It’s bad for our health/body/mind/eyes/ etc.
  2. It can kill us.
  3. It can destroy our relationships with our family and friends.
  4. We cannot have fun with our family and friends.
  5. We might feel stressed/ not happy/ sad.
  6. It can destroy the earth.
  7. We might not find a job, we will have no money.

You can build many more sentences with similar structure to fit in different topics. You just have to understand how simple sentences work.

Make sure you give enough ideas to get more marks.

But of course, if you’re better than average you should go ahead and try longer and more complex sentences.

TIP 5: Use Connecting Word to arrange your sentences.

TIP 5: Gunakan penandawacana.

Use some connecting words to help you give better answers:

  1. Also – juga/dan juga
  2. Not only that – Bukan itu saja
  3. Besides/other than that- Selain itu
  4. First of all/ Firstly – Pertama sekali
  5. Finally – akhirnya
  6. and – dan

TIP 6: Use cause and effects examples.

Tip 6: Bagi contoh dalam bentuk ‘sebab dan akibat’

Many students are stucked because they really have no idea what to say. If you are like that. Try these:

  • If ……., then…….

e.g.: If we don’t clean up the class, then we don’t have a comfortable place to learn.

  • When………, then ……….

e.g.: When the class is not clean, our teacher will remind us to do our chores.

  • Since… , ……..

e.g.: Since school was canceled, we went to the mall.

  • Because…… , so ……

e.g.: Because the weather was too hot, my dad bought us ice-cream.

Basically, you need to ask yourself “if/when this happens, how?”, “if/when that happens, how?”

By thinking these, you actually can come up will some really cool stuff. With the same structure, you can actually build many different sentences. Just let your imagination fly and don’t worry too much about your grammar.

TIP 7: It’s up to you whether you want to be honest with your answers

Tip 6: Kamu boleh bagi jawapan jujur ataupun buat cerita supaya ayat senang.

Many teachers might ask you to give the answers the teachers ‘like’ to hear.

But to be honest, if you are able to speak good enough (you can build own short sentences), I highly encourage you to be honest. After all, that’s why we learn English right? To be able to express ourselves. And tell people our opinions. If you don’t agree with something during the conversation, just tell them you don’t. I’m sure many teachers would appreciate that. Who knows you might get extra marks from there.

But if you think you feel better having some ‘standard answers’ in your pocket. So that when your teachers ask you questions you can just take the answers out and give to your teachers. That’s fine. After all, you just want to get some good marks right?

So, the decision is yours. Either way, as long as you’re able to use the language.

Yang penting, you speak English!

TIP 8:  SAY THANK YOU

When everything is done, say:

“Thank you. See you later.” (big smile) =D

Hope you find this helpful.

Break a leg.
